The Android You're Looking For: New HTC Aria Available for a Song

If you've even just been dipping your toes into the waters of the gadgetosphere, you'd think that the iPhone 4 was the only show in town. But AT&T, the iPhone's carrier, is also currently launching its second phone based on Google's Android OS--the HTC Aria. And if you've been feeling that the iPhone 4 is a bit rich for your wallet (at $200 for the 16 GB base model), the Aria might be just the ticket for smartphone goodness.

Running the Android 2.1 OS, the Aria surprisingly include the free Google Maps Navigation Beta for free turn-by-turn voice direction--a direct competitor to the AT&T Navigator monthly subscription service. It also features HTC's widget-happy Sense overlay, a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a (tiny) optical joystick, and 5-megapixel camera/camcorder as well as some of the other standards in the smartphone arena--Wi-Fi networking, Bluetooth stereo music streaming, and microSD memory expansion.

And right now, the Aria can be had for a song over at AmazonWireless--just a penny for new accounts (and 2-year contract) or just $50.01 for those AT&T customers choosing to upgrade their phone.

You're not trying to say this is new, are you? I've been using this app when it was still Midomi when I first got my Nexus One (in January). I'm not sure, but if I had to guess, I would imagine it was out much longer before then too. I know I used an early Java beta of it on Symbian years ago too.

Been using this for a few days and really like it. It's very small--about as long as an old Motorola KRZR but wider. I'm truly amazed by how much capability these modern smartphones have--and what's nice about Android is that you can customize the homescreens to reflect the programs you want/need.

For a long time I've heard people ragging on and complaining about AT&T's network. I've had AT&T for 6 years or so and have had nary a problem with the phone service or the 3G network. Having lived on both coasts during that time, and driving cross-country twice, back and forth, I never found a coverage dead zone. The only place I didn't have coverage was in a bad part of town where apparently the cell towers don't survive long because of people stealing the cabling and other items to sell to scrap dealers. I'm also the only person in my family that gets a signal at my mom's house, no one else does regardless of the network; Verizon, Sprint, etc.

My experience with AT&T here in Austin as well, Earl. I wonder if a lot of the "AT&T problems" are really iPhone issues.

I live about 30 minutes south of Austin, and have tried both AT&T and T Mobile (which I think may share a lot of towers with AT&T). Anyway, I can't get a voice call at home to save my life with either of those.

Verizon seems to be the only carrier that lets me get voice calls, let alone data, at home in New Braunfels.

Like Glenn says, if you going to put up with ATT why not get an iPhone?

because this is better than iphone maybe? i am tired of my iphone, for example, and of apple arrogance that it exudes.

I know the today's generation of Iphone. Iphone is very costly anf if you want same features phone then HTC Aria is cool for you.HTC Aria have anroid 2.0 OS with google maps feature. This is very cool invention of AT & T.

Just to let you know, unlike most Android phones, AT&T's (including the Aria) do not let you install apps from anywhere but the Android Market. (See: http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/06/17/htc-aria-review/)
