Tabletin' in 2010: Ballmer Teases HP's Slate Tablet Device

A couple days ago, the gadgetosphere got into one of its Red Bull-fueled hype frenzies when the NYTimes Bits blog suggested that Steve Ballmer would unveil "a novel take on a slate-type computer" made by HP during his CES keynote. This led many bloggers to believe that the HP device would be based on the Microsoft dual-screen tablet prototype called The Courier, which was outed by Gizmodo last fall. Here's the prototype video that Giz published:

After going through a slew of partner hardware, Ballmer and his trusty sidekick Ryan Asdourian (a Microsoft product manager) got around to showing off three Slate PCs from Pegatron, Archos and HP--with the latter getting the on-stage love. Mostly. It's still in prototype mode, and Ballmer only showed the HP Slate running the PC version of the Amazon Kindle software for Windows without mentioning timeline for release. It looks to be multitouch and can also do some gaming (a video showed it playing Frogger) in addition to being a multimedia e-reader. But that's about all we know at this point. After the keynote event, HP released some official imagery as well as a video teaser:
