After their debut launches on the other CDMA network in the U.S., Palm's webOS-powered smartphones--the Pre (at right) and the Pixi (left)--have now launched on Verizon Wireless as the
Pre Plus and
Pixi Plus (and
Amazon Wireless has them both). And like the original Sprint models, they feature fast 3G connectivity, the Palm Synergy all-in-one view of contacts and messaging, and GPS turn-by-turn navigation (now powered by Verizon's VZ Navigator Service). Additionally, both models have had their internal storage capacities super-sized to 16 GB (hence the Plus monicker), but that's not the most intriguing bonus feature.
Both the Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus can be turned into a Wi-Fi hotspot that can serve Verizon's 3G cellular broadband connectivity to up to six different devices--from laptop to iPod touch to cameras loaded with Wi-Fi-enabled Eye-Fi SD cards. There are other solutions that provide link together cellular broadband connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities--such as the 3G Novatel MiFi (available in Verizon and Sprint flavors) and the 3G/4G hybrid Sprint Overdrive, but this is one of the first instances of a mobile phone offering this feature.
And according to David Pogue, it sounds easy peasy:
You download a free app. You open it, name your hot spot, make up a password if you want one, and tap On.
Now nearby neighbors suddenly see the hot spot, and (if they provide the password) can surf it at 3G speeds, just fast enough to watch videos without skipping. Each time someone connects, a note on the Palm’s screen to let you know -- a nice touch.
MobileCrunch also offers a more in-depth look at the feature, and they also come away impressed with its speed and ease of use. The 3G hotspot feature is an additional service that's priced at $40 a month for up to 5 GB of use (with an overage charge of 5 cents per megabyte).

Hear, hear! This conflict mentality (Apple vs. Microsoft, PS3 vs. XBox, Muslim vs. Christian, Repubs vs. Dems, Thanksgiving vs. Easter, etc. etc. ad nauseam) has turned surfing the internet into a stomach-churning, blood-boiling experience that I, for one, can do without.

You all take it easy on Carl, that was barely a knock on Apple if at all. The rants I really hate are the ones that generalize about users, e.g. that Apple users just want to pay too much for status symbols, yada yada. I'm a programmer and like Unix and would like my sound to just work and stuff like that when I'm at home, so => OS X. Pretty bizarre to see digital *consumers* always slamming people like me (and there are a lot of us, go to any tech conference if you're unsure) for that choice.

Just got my case for my 3gs. I like the case, but the clip not so much. Forget about putting the phone face out.....it will fall out every time. Put it in face in and 90% of the time it will stay in. I had to chase our dog the other day, so I was running and 'pop' out it came. I also have it 'pop' out from time to time when I hop into the truck. I have resorted to not using the belt clip and rather place the phone, in the case, in a pocket for now. A little spendy for only using the product at 60% of how it should be used. The water mark thing...mine to. I even have screen protector on it, no diff.
