Shopping Around: Canon's PIXMA iX7000 Business Printer
By and large, my wife avoids talking tech with me as it seems I get a bit too detailed for her liking (she's definitely on the Dragnet tip--just the facts, thanks). But she also knows that I'm always up for a good hunt for new tech, and so occasionally she'll set me loose to find something new for our home. Recently, she asked me to research a new printer for her growing architecture business, with the requirements that it had to do 11 x 17-inch pages at minimum (for printing architectural plans), it had to be a top notch photo printer (for portfolio and customer images), and we didn't need an all-in-one (we already have a scanner and haven't sent a fax from a fax machine in years).
One that stands out to me is Canon's PIXMA iX7000 inkjet printer, which was released back in August. The iX7000 satisfies my wife's paper size requirements with its print capabilities up to 13 x 19 inches. It also offers Ethernet networking, enabling our two home-based offices to access the printer when connected to our wireless router (sadly, no built-in Wi-Fi). Other features that stood out included double-sided printing and multiple feeds (from large-capacity front plain paper cassette, rear tray for photo paper, and manual feed).
However, what most captured my attention was its Pigment Reaction (PgR) printing with 5-color LUCIA pigment ink system--a technology that Canon has been offering in printers since early 2008, but new to me. The PgR system not only seems to be great for printing on photo paper, but it also improves the quality of both text and photo prints on plain paper. According to Canon, it works thusly:
PgR technology applies a film of "clear ink", effectively coating plain paper with a protective layer that curbs paper curling, prevents bleeding and "print-through" typically associated with colour inkjet printing. This produces high quality prints on plain paper with laser-quality text, sharp, vibrant graphics and stunning images. Another key benefit of clear ink is that it makes plain paper water-resistant and resilient to accidental spills, ensuring a long lifespan of printouts.Computer Shopper is impressed with the iX7000, calling it "one of the most versatile single-function inkjet printers you can buy." Here's what CS says in regards to printing quality:
While the iX7000 isn't the fastest inkjet printer we've tested, the quality of its prints are among the best we've seen, especially for text on plain paper using the Standard quality setting. Standard-quality text was very close to laser quality, with no stray dots or misaligned characters.On the downside, the iX7000 isn't the most svelte printer, nor is it necessarily the least expensive. But this seems like a pretty good choice for our needs. What say you, End User readers? What's been your experience with Canon PgR printers? And are there other models that you like better? There was very little difference in the printed photos between the Standard and Fine modes when using glossy photo paper. As with text on plain paper, that's good news: Why waste extra money on consumables, if you can achieve excellent results at the default settings? The photo quality was very good, with deep blacks, edge-to-edge sharpness, and consistency from print to print.

I'm a fan of the Canon i9900, a 13x19 I've used for several years with excellent results and no problems, jams or wasted ink. These upgrades - two sided printing, multiple feeds, and the new ink technology -on the 7000 are useful, and if it proves to be as consistent & reliable as the older version, it's a worthwhile investment.

Canon PIXMA iX7000 is a business-focussed A3 inkjet printer. It is a big, slow and noisy machine but offers automatic duplex and network connectivity and produce great quality A4 and A3 output. Canon iX7000 is more expensive than HP's Officejet 7000. So i'll prefer HP, it is fast, more silent and gives good color result.
