Missing from Windows 7, but Not Lost
If you used Windows Vista and then choose to go to Windows 7, you are going to find that there are a number of new features. What might shock you is that you will also find that there are a number of missing things as well. In fact, there are some pretty important things missing in Windows 7 that were in Windows Vista. This includes things such as the Windows Mail program along with its Calendar, the Photo Gallery along with its ability to organize and fix pictures on your machine, and the Family Safety application for making your computer a little more safe for kids and others.
If you were using these before, you are going to find that they are no longer a part of the Windows 7 operating system.
Fortunately, while these applications are not a part of Windows 7, they are still freely available if you have an Internet connection. They are now available as the Windows Live Essential Applications. These are applications and services that you can download and install onto your computer. To do so, you can use the link provided in Windows 7 or you can go to http://downloads.live.com and click the button to download the software. This will start an installation process giving you the ability to install a number of Live Essential applications. In fact, you can simply click to select any of the applications you want to install as shown in the following figure:
Once you’ve run through the installation process, you’ll then have these applications on your Windows 7 Start menu under the Windows Live folder. You’ll be able to select and run them from there.
You might be baffled as to why a newer version of a Windows doesn’t include these programs anymore. The answer is really simple once you think about it. By pulling these applications out of Windows and placing them on the Internet as a part of Windows Live, Microsoft now has the ability to update and support the applications on a much faster pace. New versions of Windows generally don’t happen quicker than a few years. That is a long time to wait to update a standard application. Now, because these applications are separate, Microsoft will be able to update them more often and possibly even add more features more often.
So while these are missing from Windows 7, they are easy to find, and more importantly, there is a greater likelihood we’ll see updates before Windows 8 — or whatever the next version of Windows is called!

That can be a helpful thing for Windows 7 users. Too bad a "Live Essentials" version isn't available for Microsoft Office 2007. I miss my Office Assistant in Excel! That little dog and its antics helped ease the tedium.

Actually, I think this is a good move by Microsoft, because it might prevent future EU antitrust cases which are getting a bit out of hand lately :(
