Is the Search Engine War Over? Hmmm I Can't Remember
So, what exactly needs to happen before a technology war can actually be called, and the combatants move on to something else? That question was paraphrased the other day by Seattle technology blogger Todd Bishop when he strolled over to the eye-catching Seattle Public Library and put a simple question to a random sampling of people: "What's the name of Microsoft's search engine?"
In a market and international Web culture dominated by Google, the responses were predictable, but still they had to be plenty painful for MicroSofties, especially in this town. Although Live Search has been around for years, nobody that Bishop spoke to could even name the engine. I'd call that a complete defeat for Microsoft in search engine wars and an indicator that if they had better step up their effort for the hearts and minds of the current and future Web public. Step 1, 2 and 3 of that might be making more than a cursory attempt at keeping Google from snapping up Twitter, no matter how high Twitter might price itself at.
Check out Todd Bishop's post to see some of the responses he got to his question. Pretty funny stuff, but like I said, painful for the folks over there in Redmond.
