Samsung N310 Netbook Takes a Bit of a Risk with Its $600 Price Tag

Samsung N310 In case you were wondering, a fair chunk of the gadget buying population and correspondingly the segment of the electronics industry which seeks to tap into this, still seem to be enraptured with Netbooks. The result is that some manufacturers, Samsung in this case, may be looking to test that fascination. Exhibit A is the N310 (AKA NC310). Announced earlier in the week, its rounds edges and variety of available colors seem to aim for a  "barrel of monkeys" feel which is fine, maybe even cool considering the Netbook's mobile ideal. But then there are the specs (unofficial):

  • 10.1” LCD display
  • 2.7 lbs
  • OS??? (probably XP)
  • Intel Atom processor (specific one???)
  • 160GB HDD
  • 1GB RAM
  • 802.11b/g WiFi
  • HSDPA Data
  • 1.3-megapixel camera digital camera
  • WiBRO
  • 5 hour battery life with an 11 enhanced battery option
  • $577 (estimated)

Most of these specs are decent, although there is no word yet on which the specific Atom processor it will use. Beyond that though tech blogs have have been ripe with comments about the prospect of paying nearly $600 for any Netbook, especially considering that there is something of a going rate that well under that. You get what you pay for though. The $577 price tag is a conversion of the published UK price of £399, so $577 is just an estimate. The N310 will apparently also feature the option of a 11hr battery. As I sit here teethered to an adaptor feeding a crappy 2.5hr battery that seems almost worth $600. I'm just not sure how many other people might think so. If you are one, let me know.

No official news regarding the N310 has hit the Samsung Website yet, but stay tuned if you are interested, or just like the orange/powder blue color combination.

Not nearly worth it.... who will pay almost $600 for a Netbook when the unspoken price is around $350. for $600 you should get a far better Netbook or something to be consider a step forward in Netbook not more of the same but on a different color.

They need to offer XP Pro so that I can at least join them to the domain.

Gotta say that I'm pleased as punch with my Acer Aspire One 8.9".. $299 at costco, 1G/160G with XPHome (quickly replaced by Ubuntu Linux), this thing is pimptastic.. >$500 puts you in "real" laptop territory, which for a netbook is dangerous..

ps: just got the 9-cell battery upgrade, about $75 with shipping, that should get me to about 7-9 hrs..

Thanks, but I'll wait for the Apple iPad/iTouch or whatever they end up calling it. That way I can pay even MORE, but at least I'll have OS X and that Apple logo cachet. LOL!

Get the Asus Eee 1000HE. About the same specs (no HSPDA or WiBRO) (who cares, really?), but the battery lasts over 8 hours. For under $400.

Get a 2GB stick for about $30, and you have a superior machine for $200 less.

I know. I have a 1000HE with 2GB, and 16GB of flash. It's an awesome little beast that will even run Eclipse.

I think it could work. I mean, I'm really sick and tired of the cell phones not making it...all the "SMART" phones just not doing the trick...and having a laptop (what-ever) battery last 11 hours? Oh, My, Goodness!! Could it be true? And, I'd love to have you know, the Outlook mail but with some other browser window...because I hate Vista and I do have XP and it's freezing up of late...but Firefox Mozilla which I do have, is annoying because I can't figure out how/where to "embed" my Outlook/Hotmail deal...sure it's probably easy some how for some people...sure, 600 is very expensive...I'd love to have the ugly blue colored thing...I used to have an nec...my first laptop was one...notebook they called it. If it works...if I could get a broadband hook-up/"deal" through my cell carrier who doesn't do smart phones well, then I'd get it.

yes, you get what you pay. The price is affordable but too bad the screen is too small for me.
