HD Movies Now Available for Purchase at the iTunes Store

itunes store HD video titles With the release of iTunes 8 Apple made a play to capture the hearts, minds and pocketbooks HD enthusiasts by making TV shows available for purchase in HD format. Today they've done themselves one better by extending this functionality to movies as well, and for what sounds like a pretty good reason. According Eddy Cue, Apple's Vice President of Internet Services, as quoted in today's press release,

"Customers have made HD content on iTunes a hit, with over 50 percent of TV programming being purchased in HD when available."

Whoa! Half of the purchases of a title going HD when HD was a buying option. Granted these past customers may be getting a better deal quantity wise in that they are probably buying a season pass, made up of many episodes for $30-$50, versus a single movie for $20, but regardless all I have to say is what took Apple so long? Of course that's not really a serious question, since the hold up was probably all about licensing. They are definitely on the move now though and hoping those 50% numbers ring true as the HD titles roll in. If not they should still okay with the stated $4.99 per rental on HD titles 30 days after their release. The service is launching behind the weight of blockbusters "Quantum of Solace" and "Twilight" which can be pre-ordered for march 24th and 21st releases respectively. Other than those two the list of purchasable titles is modest, but I'm sure will grow. See the iTunes HD movies page for details on current offerings.
