ASUS Gets into the Wii Nunchuck Look-alike Biz with the Eeestick
ASUS has brought more than a few things to the table at this year's CeBIT in Hannover, but even though the Eeestick is not really news at this point since they have been talking about it for almost a year, I have to say that I'm taking a close look at it for the first time and am somewhat intrigued.
Recently we've been seeing more manufacturers like Nyko, via their Wand and Kama controllers for the Wii, and mLani's MoBi for PS3 and PC going after what appears to be a crowd pleasing Wii controller design. Like these, it is obvious that the Eeestick is inspired by, or more honestly put is a straightup knockoff of the Wii Nunchuck controller. Personally, I'm a fan in many ways of the Wii controller system, so when I say knockoff I mean that as a complement. Basically the control system consists of a pair of game controllers wirelessly linked together via USB, that can be used for PC gaming and as a 3D mouse as well. ASUS has said that the controller would be bundled exclusively with its Eee Box desktop computer. The Eee Box itself looks almost exactly like the Wii, so on first look "knockoff" is again in the air, but it is a full fledged computer running XP. See its specs here if you like. For my part though I'm only interested in the the controller. Its product page says that it is compatible with "PC gaming peripherals such as gamepads, mice and keypads," but also notes in asterisked text that "supported games are applicable for Eee Box/NB and Eee Stick bundle only." Does this mean that the device is only available with the Eee box and is only compatible with the games loaded on that device? Boy, I hope not since I can certainly do without the computer and games. But if compatible with any PC I wouldn't mind having one of these controllers at all. Assuming this and the controller was responsive enough, it could be great for PC gameplay, especially when projected, and it could definitely double as a media remote. Regardless, you have to wonder why it has taken so long for manufacturers to get in on this controller set up. Maybe its due to copyright issues, but no pain, no gain folks. Anyway, keep your eyes open for more info on the Eeestick in the days to come. In the meanwhile though take a look at these videos (be warned, the second is pretty cheesy).
