CES 2009: Intel's My WiFi Brings Back, Simplifies the Personal Area Network
Netbooks are the rage right now at CES, but Intel had more to show off with its Centrino 2 technology than just small laptops.
Their My WiFi technology creates a WiFi Personal Area Network (PAN) that supports and controls up to 8 devices simultaneously. This allows some useful stuff like streaming video to an HDTV, but devices can also be configured to work together to perform complex actions. For example, if you take a picture with a WiFi-enabled camera, then if you're in range of your PAN it will automatically upload the pic to your PC's photo library as well as, say, a wireless-enabled digital picture frame. Or download MP3s and have them automatically sync between your home PC, laptop, and MP3 player.
You don't need a WiFi access point to set up a personal area network; it's basically an ad hoc wireless connection between your devices, but the My WiFi Utility software handles all of the routing and security. It supports WiFi Protected Setup (WPS), so setting up your devices usually consists of just pushing a couple of buttons.
All Intel Centrino 2 products will ship with the My WiFi feature in Q2 of this year, but if you already have a Centrino-based product, don't worry--a free firmware upgrade to add My WiFi to legacy products will be available as well. You can learn more about My WiFi at Intel's website.
