CES 2009: HP Releases Multitudinous Minis

The netbook phenomenon has exploded at CES 2009.  With multiple manufacturers racing to release new models, you can hardly turn around on the show floor without seeing one.  HP brings 3 new netbook offerings to the market this year.  While they're all built on the same platform, each has a few key differences that steer them into different markets.

Mi The HP Mini 1000 XP is built on a compact 10" by 5" form factor that is only 1" thick.  Depending on what options are included, the 1000 XP will weigh between 2.25 and 2.5 pounds.  Like most other current netbooks, it's powered by an Intel Atom processor, and can be loaded with up to 1GB of RAM.  The XP 1000 comes with either an 8.9" or 10.2" BrightView display, with the smaller display simply using a larger bezel to fit in the casing.  Potential owners can also choose between two storage options: either a 16GB solid-state drive, or a 60GB hard drive.  An on-board 802.11b/g chip provides network access, and Bluetooth capability can be added as further option.  Additionally, a recessed port allows for extra storage via HP's mobile mini USB drive.  Somewhat predictably, the HP 1000 XP comes with Windows XP installed as its operating system.  The unit starts at $399, and is available now.

Tam The HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition is available with the same options and specs as the Mini 1000 XP.  The critical--and chic--difference is that the case is adorned in a peony-inspired pattern created by world-renowned fashion designer Vivienne Tam.  Marketed as "the world's first digital clutch", the Tam Edition has fashionistas squarely in sights as potential buyers.  Along with traditional online and brick-and-mortar electronics outlets, HP has also partnered with Macy's and Neiman Marcus to carry the Tam Edition.  It's available now, but this sophisticated netbook begs the premium starting price of $699.

HP's Mini 1000 Mi (see what they did there) has been designed to be easy-to-use, and runs a Linux-based operating system that's accessible for owners of all skill levels.  While the form-factor and displays are the same as the XP 1000, the 1000 Mi is upgradeable to 2GB of RAM.  Due to lower licensing fees, the HP Mini 1000 Mi starts at $379 and will be available by the end of Q1 2009.
