Today Sigma announced two new cameras at the Photokina trade show in Germany, with a DSLR sequel and a new compact with much of the same imaging chops. First up is the SD15 DSLR, which retains the 14-megapixel Foveon sensor of its predecessor SD14 but adds the TRUE II image processing engine and a larger LCD monitor to the camera. If you're not familiar with Foveon technology, the UK's PhotographyPress blog catches you (and me) up to speed:
(It's) is unique in using stacked silicon photo-detectors (2652×1768 in each of the three layers). This means it can capture all RGB colours at each and every pixel, and can therefore offer sharper resolution and more accurate colour. However, more exciting is the announcement of the compact DP2, which utilizes the same sensor and image processor, but loads them into a much more pocketable body (measuring 4.5 inches wide and 2.1 inches thick. According to Electronista, its 24.2mm f/2.8 lens is said to be equivalent to 41mm on a regular SLR, and it also features a 2.5-inch LCD, pop-up flash, manual focus in addition to autofocus, hot shoe accessory capability.
Check out DPReview for more on the SD15 and the DP2.
