Apple iPod Touch and Nano Get Torn Down

Touchtd Today, the folks at AppleInsider ran across detailed iFixit teardowns of the second-gen iPod Touch and fourth-generation iPod Nano. Sifting through the guts of both devices revealed several interesting tidbits about the capabilities and limitations of the new Apple products. The discovery of a Broadcom BCM4325 Bluetooth 2.1-capable chip in the Touch has led to speculation of possible A2DP support, which could allow the Touch to connect with wireless Bluetooth headphones. The chip also offers FM support, but given Apple's track record with radio you should probably look elsewhere for a device that will tune in your local stations. For now, the Broadcom chip will perform its main task of providing Wi-Fi capability and Nike+ integration for the device.

iFixit found that the Nano's 3.2mm wide dock connector "looks pretty big" when compared to the rest of the device, and will likely keep Apple from making future Nanos noticeably thinner. They also discovered that the Nano's battery is firmly soldered to the logic board, making replacement a pain for end-users. It's not all bad news though; the team learned that the Nano's LCD screen is protected by a glass shield that should resist scratches better than previous plastic ones.
