The New 3G iPhone in Black and White
Besides the cosmetic changes, the 3G iPhone (its official monicker) obviously provides much faster access to Internet and email over the AT&T cellular network. In onstage demoing (which I didn't get to see, since I was following text and audio updates from several sources), sites downloaded in approximately one-third the amount of time in 3G when compared to the pokey EDGE data network--which Jobs noted is approaching Wi-Fi speeds. Web site downloads are also touted as being faster than other competing phones, such as the Palm Treo and the Nokia N95.
The new model will also have an embedded GPS chip for live location tracking and turn-by-turn directions. And of course it's ready for big enterprise business usage with compatibility with Microsoft Exchange and ActiveSync. Apple also announced today the revision to the .Mac service, dubbed MobileMe, which offers some enterprise-level features such as push email and over-air synchronization of calendar events and contacts between the iPhone 3G and Mac and Windows-based computers.
But the big news is that the price has come down dramatically to $199 for the 8 GB model and $299 for the 16 GB model (as denoted from the keynote in the image below, supplied by Engadget). The current model sells from AT&T for $399 and $499 respectively. No details yet on what kind of contract that might entail from AT&T. The iPhone 3G will be available starting on July 11 from Apple Store and AT&T retail store locations. The iPhone 2.0 software/firmware upgrade will also be coming in July and will be free to all current version 1.0 iPhone owners. (Owners of iPod touch devices will once again have to pay for the privilege of installing the new software.)

As soon as someone jailbreaks 2.0, I'm sold. :)

I like the pricing on this new iPhone 3G. At $199/8GB and $299/16GB, that's 100 bucks less than a plain ol' iPod Touch at current prices.
When that price drop makes it's way to the Touch, it'll finally be cheap enough for me to concider. :)

I want an iphone. i just dont kno if i can pay the bill. plus the data plan went up to $30. apple gettin a lot of money

I have a source that tells me that you have to buy a special plan for the iPhone that costs more. I think that they're a loony. Who's right? I saw on apple.com about 2g talk time. What is 2g, and do you need a data plan for it? I hope that I can just use it on my $15 add a line for family plan, 'cause I can't afford it if the plan is over $20.

Which color do you think will be the most popular?
Black or White?
What color will you be getting?
Agen G.N. Schmitz on June 20, 2008 at 09:42 AM
Hey all,
Just to clear a few things up:
QWERTYUIOP asked about "2G" talk time -- that refers to the regular GSM network connectivity that you're probably used to if you've not had a "3G" (or third-generation network) phone. Because 3G networks are more intensive as far as how much data they send (for both voice and data transfers), a phone's battery life suffers. Check out this comparison at AnandTech:
http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=3036
Sales of the new iPhone 3G will be limited to physical Apple and AT&T retail stores for the foreseeable future, so you'll have to make the trek to your favorite mall to stand in line for one on July 11.
And yes, while the hardware cost of the iPhone 3G has been reduced by Apple, AT&T has upped the cost of its data plan by $10 per month (from $20 to $30). And while that might seem like a bummer and deal breaker to some, others consider the fact that the new iPhone provides far faster connectivity via AT&T's 3G network, which makes the extra $10 seem worthwhile. As always, it all comes down to internal checks and balances as well as techie rationalizations. (As Jeff Goldblum said in The Big Chill, "Don't knock rationalization. Where would we be without it?")

JR on June 29, 2008 at 09:23 PM
Dont be fooled! there Going to RIPP YOU OFF! with the NEW monthly FEES new fee $30 + your reg bill + fees for TEXING + GPS! ++++++++ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ FOR THE RICH ONLY!!!!
Santo on July 02, 2008 at 03:03 PM
AT&T announced today that the phone can be purchased out of contract for $599 and $699 (8gb & 16gb). Way too much!! No one can buy the phone at the advertised price unless you sign a 2 year contract, so the thing to do is buy under contract and then cancel the contract thus paying their $175 fee so your total cost will now be $199+$175 or $299+$175 plus their $36 activation cost plus taxes of course. So in the worst scenario you would pay a little more then the old phones costed. Apple and AT&T sure pulled a fast one this time, verry sneaky, and bad smart advertising to trick people into selling their older phone prior to the release of the new phone and then making it hard to get the added cost savings.
