The Coolest TV Packaging Ever

In addition to digging on home theater, I'm kind of a design geek, so I'm surprised I didn't see this last year. It's TV packaging that turns into a stand. The whole thing is made out of expanded polypropylene that can be manufactured from recycled materials. It was created by a Tom Ballhatchet, a UK design grad student.

This post is getting copied to our manufacturers. I'd love to see these rolling out of Amazon's fulfillment centers. I'm just not sure how heavy it is. If it weighs a lot more than Styrofoam, it might be impossible for us to ship it free. I wrote Ballhatchet to try to find out. We'll see where that goes. My question to readers is, "if we offered TV with this packaging as an option, do you think you would you pay a shipping surcharge to get it?"

Oh, there's also a video.

I have no idea why they're playing, "We wear short shorts."

That is terrific, very environmentally friendly!

Interesting, but I just read the same thing in another Amazon blog. I seem to be getting a number of duplicate blogs on my Amazon Daily page, where a post from EndUser will be about the same thing as a post by one of the individual bloggers. In many cases it appears to have been written by the same person, and I can't seem to get rid of it because they are posted in the same categories.

I do want to read about cool stuff like this, I just don't want to read about it twice every day.

It's an interesting idea, though I can't help but wonder what condition the packaging would arrive in. If it's meant to be displayed, would it come with some sort of outer wrapper to keep it from getting dinged up in transit? (And if so, does that defeat the purpose of its being environmentally friendly?)

I had this idea years ago. My college apartment didn't have any furniture at all. My TV stand, my bookcases, my dining room table were all made out of the cardboard boxes I had used for packing.

Wait a minute, I lie. I did purchase a folding lawn chair and a sleeping bag.
